Estimated read time 3 min read

This season, fashion designer JJ Valaya has decided to explore the rich history of Gujarat, uncovering untold stories within. Gujarat, a region with a long history dating back to the stone age, has witnessed the rule of various empires such as the Mughals and the Marathas, as well as enduring colonialism under the Portuguese and British before gaining independence. This diverse journey has left a lasting impact, creating a tapestry of multiculturalism that serves as the inspiration for JJ Valaya’s Fall Winter 23-24 collection, BARODA.

BARODA will showcase Gujarat’s vibrant history and the blend of cultural influences that have shaped the region. Valaya has paid meticulous attention to detail in translating these narratives into exquisite designs, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics. The collection will exemplify the timeless elegance and allure that define Valaya’s creations, while honoring Gujarat’s vibrant heritage.

“This season, I have chosen to delve into the history of Gujarat, uncovering a past that is both intriguing and inspiring,” says designer JJ Valaya. “Though Gujarat, like the rest of India, has a history dating back to the stone age, I find it fascinating that it experienced the rule of the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire between the 16th and 19th centuries, followed by Colonial rule with the Portuguese and British before gaining independence. This diverse journey has imprinted the land with exquisite footprints, resulting in a multiculturalism that forms the inspiring core of my Fall Winter 23-24 collection, BARODA.”

The House of Valaya is preparing to celebrate the 2023-24 Couture season with its new collection, BARODA. The collection combines exquisite craftmanship and elegant style statements through three distinctive interpretations (chapters). The first chapter, Art Deco, fuses the craft of Lipan with art deco lines and Mughal inlay motifs. The second chapter, Nomade, embraces Kutch motifs and mirrorwork in a modern interpretation. Finally, the third and final chapter, Royale, features the age-old Mashru fabric of Gujarat paired with patterns inspired by Portuguese Azulejos tiles. The collection showcases the finest silken and special weave fabrics, enhanced with Valaya’s signature embroideries, creating a magnificent offering for Indian Couture in the 2023-24 season, catering to both men and women.
